Where We Are Going
In the last few years, the meat industry has changed drastically. Johnston’s and the BC producers are ready to enter the new era and tackle the increasing challenges with a refreshed image and a focus on what we do best – quality products, old-fashioned service and high value.
In the past, Johnston’s quality has grown our customer base and business by word-of-mouth. Now, we will be telling our story: Johnston’s is the source for quality products from BC producers. We want Johnston’s to be a household name here in British Columbia and be associated with quality products for another ninety plus years.
Pig Guidelines & Regulations
The Small Lot Pork Producer Management and Production manual was developed as a collaborative effort between B.C. Pork and the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture specifically for small lot pork producers. It provides details on good husbandry practices, production economics, marketing, euthanasia, emergency management, and provincial and federal legislation.

All those involved in transporting animals either directly or indirectly have the responsibility to assess animals for fitness, then select, prepare and load only animals that are fit for the intended journey. If you are responsible for activities related to the loading, unloading or
transporting of animals, you must be familiar with – and follow – Canada’s transport of animals regulations.

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) is a viral disease causing vomiting, diarrhea, and high death loss in nursing piglets. In growing and/or mature pigs, the symptoms are less severe with a low mortality rate. This disease is only infection to swine and poses no threat to humans as it does not enter the food supply chain.

African swine fever is caused by a very contagious virus and is killing pigs and wild boars in Africa, Asia and parts of Europe. Although humans cannot be infected with African swine fever, they are the most likely source of introducing the virus into Canada through contaminated meat products, clothing and footwear. Biosecurity is key to keep diseases away from the Canadian pig population.
